I was only recently introduced to Howard Zinn through the History Channel's The People Speak, but his work impacted my life so strongly that I have been sharing with as many people as possible his work and philosophy.
Howard Zinn, Boston University historian and political activist, author of A People's History of the United States among many, many other books, lectures, etc.
I couldn't believe I had never been introduced to his work before and that most people I spoke to hadn't heard of him before the show either. But then on the other hand I could totally see how the majority of us wouldn't have heard of him.
From the Harper Collins website:
Howard Zinn is a historian, playwright, and social activist. He was a shipyard worker and Air Force bombardier before he went to college under the GI Bill and received his Ph.D. from Columbia University. He has taught at Spelman College and Boston University, and has been a visiting professor at the University of Paris and the University of Bologna. He has received the Thomas Merton Award, the Eugene V. Debs Award, the Upton Sinclair Award, and the Lannan Literary Award. He lives in Auburndale, Massachusetts.
Politics, Poetry, and the Inner Life of Democracy is a incredible interview/question and answer video with Howard Zinn from The Forum Network. This is quite possibly one of the most powerful videos and I truly hope people watch this and pass it along to everyone they know...............
I was so saddened to hear of his passing on January 27, 2010 and my thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends. And I know now more then ever it's up to each of us to stand up and speak about what we believe is important. It's only because of people like us, that change happens. Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Gandhi, Susan B. Anthony, Frederick Douglass, Mother Teresa, Anne Sullivan, Miep Gies, are just a few of the people who have changed the world and I believe each one of able to do the same.
I honestly hope that you can find the time to watch this and pass this along to others..............
“(Nationalism is) a set of beliefs taught to each generation in which the Motherland or the Fatherland is an object of veneration and becomes a burning cause for which one becomes willing to kill the children of other Motherlands or Fatherlands” Howard Zinn
"I'm worried that students will take their obedient place in society and look to become successful cogs in the wheel - let the wheel spin them around as it wants without taking a look at what they're doing. I'm concerned that students not become passive acceptors of the official doctrine that's handed down to them from the White House, the media, textbooks, teachers and preachers.” Howard Zinn
Peace, Light and Take Care,
